In today’s post I get to brag, not so much about me, but about a couple of friends who happen to be acting in the Big Apple. Before starting in my current job I spent a lot of time working in theater and there’s no better feeling than seeing your friends do well. One just made her first NY appearance. Another has already worked on many NY stages including the largest at the Metropolitan Opera and her one-woman show opens in March.
Krista Severeid made her Off-Broadway debut last month in a reading for a musical in development based on Alice in Wonderland. Last year I cast her as the charming though mismatched Anne in a production of A Little Night Music and by the time I tried to cast her again for my next show Fiddler on the Roof, she was already packing her bags for Manhattan.
Penny Orloff brings her one-woman show Jewish Thighs on Broadway to the Clurman Theater just off Broadway this spring. I music directed this production for two very successful runs in Seattle. Penny spent much of her life acting and singing on theatre and opera stages around the world and she tells you all about it in this amazing and hilarious show. It can’t all be true, can it? I accompanied her on the piano and never got tired of hearing her stories.
It's great to have talented friends. Maybe I should encourage Krista to go see Penny’s show as a short-cut to what her life as a star will be like. Nah, better she finds out on her own.
